The Quality of Numerical Literacy in Indonesia is Low | NU Circle Develops Pentahelix Program | OBROLANBISNIS.com — To overcome the low quality of numeracy literacy in Indonesia, the professional community network of NU Circle students drives the pentahelix synergy.

The pentahelix synergy involves five key elements, namely society, business and industry, academia, government and media.

“The low quality of numeracy literacy in Indonesia cannot only be overcome by the government. This is evidenced by the Indonesian literacy report card, which is still the same as it was 20 years ago. All parties must synergize, together, hand in hand to improve the low literacy competence of Indonesian children,” stressed the General Chairperson of NU Circle, Dr R Gatot Prio Utomo, in Jakarta, Tuesday, June 21, 2022.

As is known, the results of the 2018 Program for International Students Assessment (PISA) scores announced in 2019 again put Indonesia in a low position, which is ranked 74th out of 79 countries.

Indonesia’s PISA score is lower than the international average score. The average score of Indonesian students in reading is 371, mathematics is 379 and science is 396. This achievement is still below the average of 79 PISA participating countries, namely 487 for reading, 489 for mathematics and science.

According to Gus Pu, as Gatot Prio Utomo is known, the PISA results show that more than 70% of Indonesian students are not able to reach level 2 in the PISA framework.

“This is very worrying. Because only 23%, 15 year old students (equivalent to the final grade of junior high school or early grade of high school), from all PISA participating countries who did not enter this level 2, said Gus Pu.

Seeing this situation, NU Circle developed a synergy for the pentahelix program in Muara Enim Regency, South Sumatra.

Synergy is built to ‘gang up’ teacher competency improvement. According to PISA’s recommendation, improving the quality of teachers is expected to increase the literacy competence of Indonesian students.

With the Gernas Tastaka program, NU Circle collaborates with PT Bukit Asam as the funder, Sriwijaya University who takes on the role of academics and teacher learning assistants, the Muara Enim Regency Government who plays the role of regulation and teacher provider, as well as Teacher Professional Organizations and the Media.

“In the first year, the pentahelix synergy in Muara Enim Regency succeeded in moving 80 elementary schools throughout the Regency and providing 3 credits of credit for 20 Sriwijaya University students. This initial step is very proud of teachers in regions who have rarely been touched by literacy quality improvement programs,” said the UI alumnus.

In the future, pentahelix synergies like this will be implemented in a number of areas. “NUC has succeeded in building synergies in Muara Enim. It can be seen and confirmed especially to teachers and students who directly benefit from this program. Indonesia needs this kind of synergy. NUC will continue to knit the thread of nationality to improve the quality of teachers and prepare Indonesia’s golden generation in 2045,” he said. ***
